Helping Someone Find a Job

COVID-19 is still changing how we live and work across the country. Due to a decrease to in-person interactions, some businesses have suffered major downturns in business. This has resulted in job losses in many industries, like leisure and hospitality and food service.

Although some of these industries will eventually bounce back, many individuals can’t wait for that to happen. It’s easy to get discouraged when you need a job now, but your industry isn’t hiring. If you have a friend or loved one who is feeling down and out in their job search, there are a few ways you can help. Let’s dig in.

  1. Talk to them about their job search interests

The job search looks different during COVID-19. Due to the pandemic, it’s possible that the industry your friend or loved one used to work in just isn’t hiring right now. Talk to them about their interests and see if you can point them toward an industry that is currently hiring.

  1. Don’t make everything about the job search

Life in COVID-19 is hard, even for those who are employed. People miss their friends, family, and just normal human contact. Add being unemployed on top of that and the stress can life-altering.

One of the most helpful things you can do for them is to not make every conversation about the job search. Although you just want to help, being unemployed is already on top of their mind. Sometimes they just need a break from everything that’s going on.

  1. Practice video interviews with them

Your friend or loved one might have plenty of experience with in-person interviews, but video interviews can be a whole different ballgame. Ask them if they’d be interested in testing out their video software with a few mock interviews and keep these tips in mind.

  1. Help with Networking

Although COVID-19 has put an end to in-person networking events, it has opened doors in many other ways. Online networking events are happening all the time, and your friend or loved one can connect with others in their industry across the country. Research industries online and see if you can put together a list of these networking events for them to look through.
