National Staffing Employee Week is Sept. 19-23 in the United States, and we want to show our appreciation for the men and women who make up the temporary and contract workforce, and especially those who work for Express every year.

About the Staffing Industry
If you’re a temporary or contract worker, you’re not alone. In fact, according to the American Staffing Association (ASA), more than 3 million temporary and contract employees work for staffing companies each week in the United States. And during the course of a year, 16 million temporary and contract employees are put to work.

Seventy-six percent of those employees work full time, and half say it’s a way to get a permanent job. Nine out of 10 employees say staffing work has made them more employable, and 35% have been offered a permanent job by a client they worked with on a temporary or contract assignment. Of those, 66% accepted the offers.

According to ASA, the average wage for temporary and contract workers is $17 per hour, and occupations are available in all sectors, including:

  • Industrial—37%
  • Office/Clerical—28%
  • Professional/Managerial—13%
  • Engineering/Information Technology—13%
  • Health Care—9%

Studies by ASA also reveal that nine out of 10 staffing employees say they are satisfied with their staffing company.

Celebrate Your Involvement
Whether you’re employed by a staffing firm or are considering pursuing a new career path, use this week to celebrate the part you play in building a stronger economy and furthering your career. Express Employment Professionals salutes you, your hard work, and your dedication.

This Week is National Staffing Employee Week

NSEW_graphicNational Staffing Employee Week is Sept. 15-21 and we want to show our appreciation for the 3 million men and women who make up the temporary and contract workforce in the United States every week, and especially the more than 400,000 people who work for Express every year.

You might think that only a small percentage of U.S. workers are temporary or contract workers. But, that’s not the case. In fact, according to the American Staffing Association (ASA), 11 million workers are hired by U.S. staffing firms during the course of a year.

The Benefits of Being a Temporary Worker
Being employed by a staffing company can provide flexibility that otherwise might not be available in an average full- or part-time position. In a recent study by ASA, it was reported that 90% of staffing employees said temporary or contract work made them more employable. And, according to the study, having a flexible work schedule is one of the primary reasons people use a temporary staffing firm. With this flexibility comes an alleviation of stress and an increase in career satisfaction that may not be possible in a traditional job. Even better news – while working a temporary job, Express employees average 37 hours a week, and 75% of Express employees go on to full-time jobs.

So, whether you’re employed by a staffing firm or considering pursuing a new career path, use this week to take pride in the integral part you play in not only furthering your career, but also building a stronger economy. Express Employment Professionals salutes your hard work and dedication.

Associate Spotlight: Jomon Raju

Express Employment Professionals employs more than 335,000 workers in the United States and Canada each year, and they all have a story to tell. They represent a diverse group of workers with different skills, backgrounds, and traditions that have a global impact on the economy. Our associates come from all walks of life and hold with them true stories of inspiration.

As we continue our series highlighting Express’ associates, we look at an associate who chased after opportunity and found that dream in an unlikely situation. Sometimes you may not start where you expect, but a solid work ethic and determination can help you end up where you want to be.

Jomon Raju
Jomon graduated from college in 2010 with a computer sciences degree, but was having trouble finding a job in the IT field.  As time went on with little to no position openings, he needed some sort of income until he could find a job in his field. One day, Jomon was driving down the highway and saw a sign for the downtown Fort Worth, TX, Express office, advertising openings for call center positions.

He jumped on the opportunity, applied, and was initially placed in a warehouse position he worked for six months. While working there, his supervisor found out that Jomon had a computer sciences degree.  The supervisor contacted the vice president of IT to let him know about Jomon and his education.  The VP and his group set up an interview with Jamon and were very impressed by his hard work and dedication. Even though the IT group concluded that Jamon didn’t have experience in the particular application they work with, they decided to invest the time in training him.

With training from the IT department, Jamon’s hourly rate increased by nearly 300%!  He’s been working on the documentation of their processes and the IT department has been very pleased with his performance. They’re now training him on their applications in hopes of having him on their development team.

“I never thought I’d find an IT position by taking a warehouse job,” Jomon said.

Associate Spotlight: Jimmy Maher

When most people think of staffing agencies, they think of strictly temporary work. The truth is many people have found life-long careers thanks to companies like Express. More and more workers are enjoying the flexibility in their schedule from working with staffing agencies. Employers are also relying more on staffing agencies to fill their open positions before hiring full-time for openings.

Our most recent associate spotlight showcases one of those individuals who finds pride in working with Express as a career for many years. Associates like the ones we showcase are a testament to how work ethic and positive attitude can go a long way in your profession, even in the roughest of economic conditions.

Jimmy Maher

Jimmy Maher started working for the Greensboro, NC Express office in 1992 as a lawn and building maintenance technician.  During his time with Express, Jimmy worked with five different clients.  Throughout Jimmy’s nearly 20-year career with Express, he worked for a single client for 14 years.  In that time, Jimmy’s commitment and enthusiasm were apparent because he didn’t own a car and had to take the bus to work from one side of town to the other.

Over the years, Jimmy was given many raises due to his integrity and dependability.  When he celebrated his ten year anniversary with Express, he was given a cash bonus for his loyalty to Express, its clients, and his job.

“Jimmy is a man who believes in hard work, doing the right thing, and being responsible.  He was a shining example to others on the job,” said Hope Daniel, Front Office Coordinator of the Greensboro Express office.

When Jimmy decided to retire, the client did not want him to leave. They knew they would be losing a cherished employee.  The client wanted him so badly, Jimmy decided to extend his retirement date three times and keep working to aid the client.  He is now happily retired and settling down after a fulfilled career.

We are very grateful for having Jimmy as a part of the Express family for so many years.  The Greensboro office will miss him, and everyone at Express wishes him the very best in his retirement and future achievements.

When looking for a job, don’t discount what staffing agencies like Express can provide. You may find a long, fulfilling career like Jimmy did through the experience and opportunities that can come from working with Express. If you’re interested, check it out.
