Staffing Companies Are About More than Temp Jobs

In Express Employment Professionals’ Fourth Quarter 2018 Job Insights survey, 79% of businesses surveyed said that it was “somewhat” or “very” difficult for them to fill open positions. That means employers are going to do everything they can to keep great employees like you at the company.

Studies show the total cost of employee turnover can be as high as 150% of an employee’s annual salary.

Assume the average salary in your company is $50,000—that means every time an employee leaves, the cost to replace them could be as high as $75,000! Now, multiply that number by average yearly turnover, and you can see how quickly it adds up. (more…)

  1. I’ve been asked the following: “Tell me about your experiences, specifically, how do you attribute your successes?” What are good answers?

The answer to this question is going to depend on your individual experiences. There aren’t any specific “good answers” our recruiters can provide here, since everyone is different. However, there are a few topics you can cover and adapt to your personal circumstances.

“I think good answers are ones that are quantifiable! For example, an accounts receivable person could say that they were successful in their last role by cleaning up aging reports and collecting over $1 million in 2016.”—Shannon Jacoby, Bellingham, WA.

  1. Why do companies require a college degree when it isn’t necessary for the job?

Many companies use a college degree as a baseline. Sometimes a degree is indicative of passion and hard work. However, you might be able to make up for the lack of a degree in other ways.

“Sometimes, this is a company policy. I tell people to never let it deter you in applying. Many clients will take on-the-job experience in lieu of a degree.”—Shannon Jacoby, Bellingham, WA.

“Some positions may require a degree for specialized positions, for example, a mechanical engineer. For other positions, completing a degree signals to an employer that you are a person who is determined to see a task through and committed to doing so.”—Desiree Stevens, Littleton, CO.

  1. What behaviors are recruiters and hiring managers looking for in an interview?

Although much of the interview focuses on testing your hard skills (your job experience and abilities), your soft skills are being tested as well. How do you handle stress? Do you make the proper amount of eye contact? How does your personality fit in with the company culture? Interviewers look at certain cues for insight on how you might function as an employee.

“I recruit primarily on the industrial side, so I look for behaviors that indicate that the individual can handle the position. For example, if someone can physically do the job, can understand the industry terminology I use, can fill out their own paperwork, etc.”—John Calabrese Jr., Utica, NY

In the world of interviewing, your “elevator pitch” is a quick way to describe who you are and why you’re right for the job. Think of it as a more concise version of your cover letter.

You should have one of these speeches handy for networking events and interviews. Or even when you run into someone who is in a position to hire you in a bid to leave them knowing more about you. An elevator pitch isn’t just for business professionals—it can also be helpful for any person as a quick and concise summary of who they are.

Prepare to Speak on Your Skills and Experience

Practice makes perfect, right? This mantra doesn’t just apply to sports’ it applies to interview, too! If you’ve never had an interview before, your first one probably isn’t going to go very well if you don’t prepare in advance. To avoid that, practice interviewing with professional groups, friends, and family members.

Also do all of your research on the company ahead of time. Have some idea of not only the position itself, but also the company’s culture and mission statement. Be sure to brush up on projects the company has done recently to sprinkle into the conversation.

Ask Relevant Questions After the Interview

After an interview ends, you’re almost always asked if you have any questions. And your answer should always be yes. Asking questions shows you’re interested in the company. You can ask for more information about the job, something specific about the company culture, a question aimed at your interviewer, or something about the recent history of the company. Remember to always ask about next steps! That way you won’t have to worry about whether or not they’ll email you back.

The Job Hunt: Staying Motivated

MotivationSummer_July2013_webExpress Employment Professionals recently released results from a new Harris Poll of the unemployed, which, for the third year in a row, shows a significant number of Americans have completely given up looking for work.

Forty-three percent of those surveyed said they have completely given up looking for work. For those unemployed more than two years, the percentage of individuals giving up on the job hunt increased to 59% from 2015.

Results were based on a May 2016 survey of 1,513 jobless Americans, age 18 and older, who are unemployed but capable of working.

Who Are the Unemployed?
According to the survey, 55% of the unemployed are men; 45 % are women; and 33% are between ages 18 and 29.

The majority lack a college degree:

  • 38% received a high school diploma
  • 22% attended college, but did not receive a degree
  • 13% hold a bachelor’s degree

Of those with at least a college degree, 52% indicated they wish they had focused on a vocational career such as automotive technology, electrician, plumber, HVAC specialist, dental assisting, or medical assisting. If you find yourself thinking about a vocational career, Express published a white paper, “Caution: College May Not Be For Everyone,” that takes an in-depth look at career technical education, and compares its benefits to a traditional bachelor’s degree.

American Inventor and businessman Thomas A. Edison once said, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”
If you are among the unemployed, it can be a frightening time. However, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates there are 5.8 million open jobs. When re-entering the workforce, it’s important to be honest about resume gaps and be open to the idea that you might need to look for a career path in a different industry.

You can always take advantage of the time you have to read, volunteer, or continue your education. Use your time to work on your resume, polish your skills, and heed Edison’s advice. Try sending out one more resume a day, applying for one more job per week, and calling on your network to see if they know of open jobs.

Resources to Find Work
The 2016 survey on the “State of the Unemployed” indicates that unemployment is becoming a chronic condition. More than half, 51%, reported they haven’t been on a job interview since 2014.

According to the study, the unemployed reported they are putting in an average of only 11.7 hours per week looking for work. Recruiters, however, will often tell you that a job seeker needs to spend more time looking for a job.

In today’s online world, there are numerous sources that you can use to enhance your job search. Job boards such as Monster or Indeed.com provide valuable listings. Also, company websites often list open jobs. And, there are valuable websites that help enhance your job search, as well as offer resume tips.

You can also use a staffing company, like Express Employment Professionals, to help you find work. According to the American Staffing Association, more than 3 million temporary and contract employees work for staffing companies during an average week. And, during the course of a year, American staffing companies hire nearly 16 million temporary and contract employees.
