Poll: Do You Plan on Looking for Seasonal Work this Year?

The Results Are In: What Did You Gain out of Your Summer Internship?

internship_poll_webIn a recent poll, we asked what you believe you gained out of your summer internship. The results show that, overall, Movin’ On Up readers feel their summer internship was a great way to get hands-on experience in their career of choice. In fact, 67% of respondents stated that their experience was the most prevalent thing they took away from their internships, while 33% of respondents shared that their internships were simply ways for them to meet an educational requirement.

Getting an Internship
It’s clear that summer internships are a great way for college students and recent graduates to gain some real-world experience before heading back to school or entering the workforce. But, internships aren’t only found during the summer months. In fact, fall and spring semester internships are nearly just as common.

If you’re looking for an internship, consider taking the Internship Predictor Poll from Internships.com for an intricate look at what programs would be great for you. Then, visit one of the several places available to find opportunities near you. Your school or university may be an excellent resource for finding the perfect internship. If you’re a recent graduate, check with your school’s alumni office to see if they have ways to help their graduates find internships. Career fairs are also a great way to get your foot in the door by asking about potential opportunities. Poll: How has your education affected your career path?

But sometimes, the jobs we end up in aren’t directly tied to the education we received. Express Employment Professionals recently released the results of a survey conducted in both the U.S. and Canada which revealed that the least important factor when looking at job candidates was education. Instead, work ethic/integrity and attitude were the key characteristics that affected the hiring decision.

For our August question of the month, we want to know what role your education has played in your career or job search.

The Results Are In: Have You Considered Starting Your Own Business?

startownbusiness_smallIn a recent poll, we asked if you’ve ever considered opening your own business. The results show that, overall, Movin’ On Up readers either want to start their own business, are in the process of doing so, or already own a business. In fact, 46% of respondents stated they would like to start their own business but didn’t know where to begin. Nearly 20% of respondents already own their own business, while 17% were in the process of starting their business. Respondents who thought owning their own business was not financially feasible for them or did not appeal to them represented slightly more than 8% and 7%, respectively.

Because the majority of Movin’ On Up readers desire to open their own business but don’t know where to start, we wanted to provide a few helpful tips for starting your own small business.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is a great resource for small businesses in the United States. Whether you have questions about grants and loans, business plans, marketing, or virtually anything else about starting a small business, the SBA website is the place to go.

Poll: Is Business Ownership for You?

The numbers were even higher for the Millennial generation, age 20 to 34-years old, with 67% saying they want to start a business. But taking the leap from wanting to start a business to actually being a business owner can be an overwhelming and thrilling process. With more than 500,000 businesses created monthly, we want to know if our Movin’ On Up readers are planning an entrepreneurial rung on their career ladder. Let us know by voting in our poll!

Poor Leadership Top Workplace Stress

StressPollResults_May2014_webApril was stress awareness month, so we checked in with our readers on the top workplace stress triggers in our monthly poll. Topping the list with 21% of the results was “lack of/poor leadership,” followed by 15% responding that “long hours/increasing workloads” are the biggest trigger of stress. Tied for the third spot with 10% of the votes were “inadequate pay/benefits” and “poor working environment/company culture.”

Here is how the remaining responses ranked:

  • Concerns about job security: 9%
  • Poor work-life balance: 9%
  • Work is uninteresting/not your chosen career: 7%
  • Poor relationships with co-workers: 7%
  • Inadequate job training: 5%
  • Lack of opportunities for advancement: 4%
  • Other: 3%

Top Causes of Stress for Leaders and Managers
Leadership challenges plague both employees and those charged with leading a company. Express Employment Professionals also asked the same questions about workplace stress to the readers of Refresh Leadership, a blog for managers and leaders, and “lack of/poor leadership” topped their list with 17% of the votes. “Long hours/increasing workloads” came in second place with 15% of the votes, ranking the same spot on the list as top causes of stress for the Movin’ On Up readers.

If you’ve thought being the boss would solve all your stress at work, this may crush your hopes of an easier life when you move up the corporate ladder. However, it can be comforting to know that you’re not alone in facing challenges with leadership. A search for leadership books on Amazon returns over 20,000 results, a testament to the true struggle leading a team and working with others can be. As a point of reference, there were only 10,000 weight-loss books on Amazon, even with the constant diet fads.

Leadership is often about communication, and your manager may be better served in helping you if you find an effective and efficient way to share your challenges and successes. It may not solve all your workplace worry, but it could be the start of less stress.
