4 New Year’s Resolutions for Job Seeker Success

2023 is just a few days away, and for many people, with a new year comes new resolutions.

To achieve the goals you’ve set, make sure you have a clear plan for success. Start with small changes that can make a difference in the long run.

1. Give Your Resume a Makeover

It’s important to update your resume regularly so you’re not scrambling at the last minute when you begin your job search. Take some time to reflect on everything you’ve accomplished in your career. Update your resume with new skills and metrics that will help you demonstrate why you’d be the best candidate for the position you’re applying for. To help trim the fat from the content, remove any outdated information from your resume. Always double-check for grammar and spelling mistakes after making changes to your resume. Typos and other errors are small but costly mistakes.

2. Find or Become a Mentor

Once you’ve identified where you want to go with your career, find an experienced professional in that field. A mentor will be able to give you positive guidance through your makeover process and beyond. If you are looking for work, inform your mentor about it. Mentoring can take a considerable amount of time, energy, and effort. Ask your mentor what you can do to help them as well. You can even take this resolution a step further by becoming a mentor to someone else.

3. Create a Professional Social Media Presence

Social media plays a big part in our personal and professional lives. Many recruiters and hiring managers will look at your online profiles to help get a better feel for who you are as a potential candidate. Make sure that on sites like LinkedIn, you have a professional profile picture and updated achievements that mirror your resume. Delete any posts or photos that may appear inappropriate or offensive. You don’t want to be disqualified from a job opportunity because of your social media presence.

4. Commit to a Routine

Finding the right job can take some time. So you don’t stress yourself out early into the year, make sure you stick to a routine regarding your job search. Find a good number of jobs to apply to each week. Also, narrow down the types of companies you want to work for so you can tailor your search.

The easiest way to hold yourself accountable for your job search goals is to write those goals down, and they should be as specific and simple as possible.
