Celebrate Black History!

“In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute.”

Thurgood Marshall

February honors Black History Month (BHM); it’s a time to celebrate and honor Black people’s contributions, achievements, and culture in the U.S., Canada, and worldwide.

The month also draws attention to some of the more difficult historical periods Black people faced. Here are a few practical ideas for maximizing BHM at work all year round.

Participate in Diversity and Inclusion Opportunities

“When we’re talking about diversity, it’s not a box to check. It is a reality that should be deeply felt and held and valued by all of us.” —Ava DuVernay

Promoting diversity and inclusion is key to supporting a wide range of employees in the workplace. If your company organizes events around BHM, volunteer on the planning committee or participate in the month-long celebrations. There may even be training sessions on diversity and inclusion that may pique your interest. Take advantage of the possibilities to learn more about Black history and promote engaging and intentional conversations with co-workers.

Be a Mentor

“A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself.” —Oprah Winfrey

Another way to contribute to diversity and inclusion efforts is to advocate for mentorship opportunities. Mentorships in the workplace should be genuine and authentic. Go for it if you know a Black co-worker with whom you’d like to establish this relationship. If you already have a mentor relationship with a Black co-worker, take them out to lunch and listen to their stories. If you and your mentee both enjoy reading, find a book about Black history or written by a Black author that you can read together.

Celebrate the 2023 Black History Theme

Since 1976, every American president has endorsed a specific theme for BHM. The 2023 theme is “Black Resistance.”

Remember, you can celebrate Black history anytime by promoting meaningful activities and supporting your Black co-workers all year long. Happy Black History Month!
