Canada Employed: Hiring Optimism; Companies Encounter Wage Increases 

Canada Employed explores the state of employment and unemployment in Canada. Learn more about the latest insights, according to a recent Express Employment Professionals-Harris Poll survey. This month’s topics include the outlook on hiring in the remainder of the year and plans to counteract rising minimum wages.  

The survey showed companies are still optimistic about hiring:  

  • 74% of companies have a positive hiring outlook for the rest of the year. 
  • 41% plan to maintain headcount.  
  • 73% of companies that are planning to reduce headcount are doing so to reduce costs.  

Companies may turn to automation or layoffs if wage increases are mandated, according to the survey:  

  • 32% of companies would increase salaries/wages across the company if there were mandatory minimum wage hikes.  
  • One in five companies say these wage hikes would cause them to utilize more automation/AI, decrease employee hours, reduce their workforce, and/or outsource more.
