Skilled Trades have a significant impact on the economy and businesses of all sizes, and Nov. 3–9, we’re recognizing National Skilled Trade and Technology Week (NSTTW) in Canada! This week celebrates the abundant career opportunities in these fields and promotes them as successful career paths for young Canadians and the public.
A job in Skilled Trades can offer a competitive salary, on-the-job training, the ability to relocate and find work, and the opportunity to be your own boss. According to a 2019 report, 65% of Skilled Trades workers would strongly recommend the trades to a young person, 81% enjoy a sense of financial security, and on a scale of 1–10, 65% rated their job satisfaction between eight and 10.
With 700,000 Skilled Trades workers retiring between 2019 to 2028, and an anticipated labour shortage in the construction sector of up to 29,000 workers by 2027, there’s a growing need to recruit and train skilled workers. To meet industry demand, more than 256,000 new apprentices are needed by 2026 with the highest demand for cooks, industrial electricians, industrial mechanics (millwrights), painters and decorators, and welders. Many initiatives in Canada promote careers in Skilled Trades and technology, including apprenticeship programs and a mandatory technology credit for high school students.
